A bread van stops outside the church at the end of our courtyard every morning (apart from Sunday!) and sounds its horn. Children love running out to buy the baguettes.

But if more than bread is needed, pas de panique! Although there are no shops in Coutarnoux, shops and a cafe are only a five minute drive away in the pretty village of L'Isle sur Serein where there is a tabac, a Casino (grocery store), a florist, a chemist, two hairdressers, a Post Office, a butcher, a baker and a bank with a cash point. There is also a bar, Les Trois Epées, in the village square (which has free internet access) and a very good restaurant, Le Pot d'Etain. Don’t forget that small shops are usually closed from 12pm-2pm in France and closed on Mondays.

But again, pas de panique! If you are stuck, there is a large Auchan supermarket in Avallon, just 20 minutes drive away, which not only opens on Mondays but stays open at lunchtimes.

Avallon is an interesting market town with an old quarter, cobbled streets, Romanesque cathedral, museums and spectacular rampart views across the valley of the Cousin. It has specialist food shops full of local produce, a Saturday market and various convenient supermarkets. It also has four antique shops, a bookshop, and a Maison de Tourisme whose staff are most helpful.

Also nearby: you can buy wine cheaply (Domaine de Mauperthuis) from a local producer, Laurent Ternynck, who lives at Civry.

Burgundy is famous for its wines and in the Yonne, St Cyr les Colons, Irancy and Chablis are all worth visiting for degustations. They are usually open seven days a week. There is a guide to local producers on the book shelf.

In the Cote d'Or you can buy such famous wines as Montrachet and Nuit St Georges. Beaune is a 40 minute drive away.

If you are looking for local artisanal produce, there is a pottery at Noyers-sur-Serein which has beautiful tiles and pots that reference mediaeval designs while Vezelay has several clothes boutiques and shops selling local delicacies.
